So, what happens when an AC unit freezes? Put in simple terms, the indoor evaporator coils which are the cold coils get too cold when airflow is restricted. These gets frozen over leading to what is called the freezing of the ac unit. So, when it comes to unfreezing the ac unit, what it means is to thaw the ice off the frozen evaporator coils.
What are the ways in which the ice is thawed?
There are 4 ways to unfreeze the ac unit.
Do it naturally
Most of the technicians are of the opinion that the best way to unfreeze the ac unit is to let it be. If done nothing, then the ice will thaw itself over a day. However, during the Summer, staying indoors without the ac unit is uncomfortable and hard. Most homeowners or commercial space owners don’t want to wait for that time.
Putting the ac unit on ‘Fan Only’ mode
This is another way to unfreeze the ac unit. In this process, the flow of refrigerant is shut and the indoor fan is only run. The warm airflow melts all the ice on the indoor coils within a couple of hours.
Unfreezing the ac unit too fast
This is not always the practiced way, but surely works fine if done right. You can use a blow torch to thaw the ice quickly. Or if you are not that confident, then you can always hand it over to the technician.
